The BenQ GS50 is easily one of the best portable projectors you can get if you have a healthy budget and want to ensure a great level of quality.įirst and foremost, it’s truly built for portability, with a hard-wearing outer case that is splash resistant, is drop tested to about two feet (or "carrying height"), and comes with a smart carry case. Slightly pricy for HD pictures (but worth it for the portability) It’s incredibly bright too and will be able to be used much earlier than the battery-powered projectors. The projector can run stood up using a mirrored surface to direct the picture or lying down (the handle can be utilised to help the projection angle) and it’s quick to set up when moved, making it versatile if you’re taking it to new locations. The power cable winds up into the base to be moved tidily, and there are carry handles to help you transport it. It’s hard to imagine how you could get a better picture outside than the amazing 4K sharpness at sizes of up to 150 inches.Įven without a battery and of a fairly large size, this is clearly designed to be moved around.
Given that it needs a mains connection it may be slightly cheating to call this truly portable, but if you can run an extension lead out to it you can definitely use it outside, and you'll be incredibly pleased.

If you don't have a room without windows, consider getting blackout curtains. Without a completely dark room, the image can look washed out and be hard to see. In most cases, you'll need 10 to 15 feet between the screen and the projector (be sure to check the “throw distance” listed by the manufacturer in the manual) to achieve screen sizes over 100 inches. Over 2,000 lumens is a good starting space for any kind of lit viewing, but we recommend 3000 or above if you're viewing in a bright room.Īnother thing to bear in mind before you get a projector is just how much space you'll need to properly set it up. Make sure you get enough lumens (how bright your projector will get at its peak, the higher the number the better). This is because setting up full-size projectors to fit your screen, be in focus, etc., can be a pain, so once you get everything dialed in, you'll want to leave it as-is. Unless you're going for a portable option, you'll want to make sure you have a projector mount ($24) and audio cables properly routed to the location of your projector. Projectors are also much more portable and easier to set up than ever. You used to have to shell out more than $10,000 to get an excellent projected experience, but you can now get a massive, beautiful picture for less than the cost of a flagship TV. For that authentic movie theater experience at home, you’ll need a projector (and a popcorn maker).
